Landed Permanent Residence (LPR) FAQ
- Are all LPR applications guaranteed to be approved?
No. There are no guarantees that your LPR application will be approved. You can check with your local agent, and they will also say the same. Singapore Immigration & Checkpoint Authority is the final approving authority for LPR application. But all my clients so far are all approved. My advice is as long as you fulfill all the requirements, and you do not have any bad records in Singapore, you have a big chance to be approved. - Is LPR the same as PR ?
The answer can be yes or no. Yes, if it's related to job offer. LPR is treated the same as PR in job application. But LPR is only a temporary PR, it only allows you to stay and look for job for at most 1 year, you have to find a job within that time to convert to PR. After you get your PR, you can stay long term and enjoy more benefits compared to other foreigners. - What are the benefits of being PR?
As a PR, you are considered a Singapore residence, so you can stay for long term in Singapore, without feeling worry for visa extension. You can apply for a library membership, credit card easily. You get subsidized on medical bill. You can purchase public housing flat, etc. - I heard that being a PR, my salary is cut off? Is that true?
That's absolutely wrong! As a PR, your salary is added by the company, for first year PR, you earn 104% of your salary, 2nd year 109%, 3rd year and so on 114.5% . The amount that is deducted is your cash portion, but the deduction plus additional from company will go into your CPF saving account. This is still your money, you can use it to buy property, for medical bill, and for retirement. Landed Permanent Residence (LPR) Eligibility
Before we go to the procedure, we will discuss what is the eligibility to apply for LPR?
- You must hold a tertiary education qualification.
You have to hold at least Bachelor Degree from reputable university in your country. Sorry for Diploma holder, you are not eligible to apply, but you can pursue your Bachelor Degree first and apply for LPR. - You are not more than 50 years of age.
Singapore needs a young and productive workforce, so you have to be less than 50 to be eligible to apply. If you are more than 50, and you have your kids graduated, you can apply LPR for your kids, and once your kids get LPR approved, and find a job, he/she can apply Long Term Social Visit Pass (LTSVP) for their parents. - You are not working in Singapore
This is the most fundamental requirement, you are not allowed to work in Singapore when you apply for LPR. If you are currently working under working visa, you are not allowed to apply LPR, but you are allowed to apply PR after at least 6 months of work.
Why Landed Permanent Residence (LPR) ?
Actually, you do not need to apply LPR in order to work in Singapore. You can use the working visa scheme, as long as you can find a company which want to sponsor for you. Unfortunately, there is a quota limitation in sponsoring foreigner working visa for every company (source: MOM). That is why most companies prefer to hire citizens or PR rather than foreigners. In addition to that, the advantage for employers is that there is less paperwork, formalities and expenses involved. So it's better for you to apply LPR first prior to coming and looking for job in Singapore.
When you come to Singapore, you are given 30 days tourist visa, which means you are allowed to stay in Singapore only for 30 days, you can extend your visa once, so total you get 2x30 days to find a job with company who wants to sponsor visa. If let's say you can't find a job within 2x30 days, sorry, you have to leave Singapore.
The easier way is by using Landed Permanent Residence (LPR). By holding LPR status, you are entitled to 2x6 months, total 1 year visa, more than sufficient time to find a job! And more over, you are treated equally as Singaporean and PR for job application, because you do not need visa sponsorship from company. There are no companies which do not want to employ PR status, while many companies do not want to sponsor working visa for foreigner.
As soon as you get a job in Singapore, you can convert your LPR to PR very easily, and congratulations for your new job and your future better living in Singapore!

The status could be:
- Singaporean (Singapore citizenship)
This is a local citizen, which would not be appropriate for you, because you are definitely still holding your home country citizenship. So I wouldn't explain on this. - Permanent Residence (PR)
This is a residence status, you are still holding your own country citizenship, while you are eligible to stay and work in Singapore. PR is equivalent to Singaporean, in terms of job finding, most of job ads put "Singaporean / PR may apply", means they only consider applicants which is Singaporean or PR, and not foreigner. As a PR, you are free to stay in Singapore for long term, without feeling worry about your visa extension. - Working Visa (S-Pass, E-Pass)
This is the working visa for foreigner. You have to be employed to get this visa. Company MUST sponsor and pay for you! and there is quota limitation for it. That is why most company do not want to hassle with this, and it's much more convenient for them to hire PR / Singaporean. Using this visa, if you resign on your job, your status becomes tourist visa again, which means, you have to find other company to sponsor visa for you, or else you have to leave Singapore in 30days.
